The scented leaves and more strongly scented rhizomes have traditionally been used medicinally and to make fragrances, and the dried and powdered rhizome has been used as a substitute for ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. Chewing the rootstock of the plant can cause visual hallucinations, possibly due to the presence of alpha-asarone or beta-asarone. Calamus is also one of the ingredients in Absinthe.     Valerian (Valeriana officinalis,) is a perennial flowering plant, with heads of sweetly scented pink or white flowers that bloom in the summer. Valerian in herbal medicine is the name of a herb or dietary supplement prepared from roots of the plant. Crude extract of the root is often sold in the form of capsules. Valerian root has sedative and anxiolytic effects. It can also be classified as a drug, since its consumption produces a sedative or medicinal effect. Provide valerian with full sun for at least 6 hours a day. It likes a nitrogen rich soil that drains well and appreciates plenty of moisture. Valerian can grow to about 5 feet high and more than a foot across, so give it plenty of space. It is hardy in zones 4 through 9.
